Paper Bag Kites

Spring is in the air! Something fun to do on a spring day is fly a kite. Just yesterday, my daughter and I were outside enjoying the weather and flying a kite. She really enjoyed this, so I thought I’d share with you an idea of how to make your own kite. It’s a simple activity to do and you can use whatever craft materials you have around your house.

What you need:

  • Paper lunch bag

  • Yarn or string/twine

  • Popsicle stick

  • Streamers

  • Tape

  • Scissors

  • Glue

  • Materials to decorate your kite with. This can be anything you have around the house, such as stickers, pom poms, markers, crayons, paint, etc.

How to make your kite:

  • Take the paper bag and let your child decorate it anyway they want. They may choose to glue things on their bag for decoration (stickers, pom poms, etc.). They can color a picture on it or paint a design on their bag. Just make sure the bag is dry before you move on to the next step.

  • Cut a little hole on the bottom of the base of the bag with your scissors.

  • Cut a piece of yarn or string (about 20 inches long). Tie one end of the string to the middle of your popsicle stick and feed the other end of the string through the hole you cut on the bottom of the bag. Feed the string through the inside of the bag. The popsicle stick should end up at the base of the bag on the inside of the bag. The popsicle stick will keep the kite string from pulling out when you’re flying your kite.

  • Cut streamers and attach them to the open end of the bag using tape. Voila: your kite is finished!

Head outside and go fly your kite. Kites fly best when there is a bit of a wind or children usually enjoy running around with them and letting them fly behind them. This is a great opportunity to get outside and enjoy the beautiful spring weather. Have fun!
