DIY Simple Scale

One of the easiest ways to teach your child the concept of weight is to illustrate how the simple scale works. You can make it together with your child. It is a great way to get your child thinking, talking, exploring and actively participating in the process.

Category: activity, science

Materials: recycled wrapping-paper tube (pillar), cardboard box, two chopsticks taped together (beam), scissors, two cups, string or wire, ruler, candies, toys, or other small items, weight that fits in the tube.

Step 1: Decorate the paper tube and cardboard with wrapping paper left from X-mas or colorful tape.

Step 2: Cut two notches in one end of the pillar. They must be across from each other. Make sure that beam fits in the notches freely.

Step 3: Punch two holes near the rim of each cup, wire with string or rubber band to make a handle.

Step 4: Tie the weight (i.e., fishing sinker) in the center of the beam and place it into the pillar. This will prevent the beam from tipping over.

Step 5: Hang two cups on each end of the beam.

Step 6: Ask you child to fill the cups with different items and explain you what happened.
